A few days before his inauguration and amid pledges to impose tariffs on the US's biggest rival, President-elect Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
According to the Chinese foreign ministry, the two leaders discussed trade, the drug fentanyl and TikTok in a phone call on the same day the Supreme Court upheld a law banning the app unless it is sold by its China-based parent company.
"We both attach great importance to interaction, and hope for a good start for China-US relations during the new US presidency," Xi said, according to China's foreign ministry.
It is known that Beijing and Washington have remained locked in a tense economic competition since Trump's first term, when relations shifted towards a more contentious rivalry.
